Alex has decided to write a paper on cell phone etiquette. Many of his instructors have talked about the use of cell phones in the classroom.  Alex is interested in the use of cell phones in places such as classrooms, libraries, movie theaters, etc.  He did a search on Google about cell phone use and found some newspaper articles and web blogs that talked about cell phone etiquette.  When Alex got his rough draft back his instructor had commented that he didn’t do enough research.  His instructor said he could only use scholarly sources, that he should include statistics and background information on cell phone use, and also discuss the issues from both sides of the argument.

 Here is Alex’s thesis statement:

People should restrict their use of cell phones in public places such as subways, movie theaters, and libraries because they disturb the rights of others.

Answer the following the questions.

1. Identify the keywords in the thesis statement.

 2. What are some broader and narrower terms for the keywords?

 3. Based on the new instructions from his professor, what other keywords should Alex use to look at the argument from both sides?

4. Books, journals, encyclopedias, websites, newspapers, and magazines are types of  information sources available, which of these should Alex use and why?

5. Where should Alex look to find  books in the CCNY library on this topic?

6. List the title, author and call number of a book Alex's  topic.

7. Provide the citation (author, article title, journal title, vol/issue, year, page number) for a scholarly article on Alex's' topic.
